Attn: Confused Christian in pain

The problem you face is a living nightmare:

It's a Living NightmareWhat you need and what you believe are in conflict.

Your heart is breaking...

You look for answers and get the same old line:

  • God hates divorce!

  • To be a good Christian, you have to stay in that marriage no matter how much you don't like it.

  • And, if you do get divorced, you can never get married again.

  • Oh, and by the way, that divorced man or woman who you love -- it'll be adultery if you marry them.

RE: Pain and Confusion about the Bible and DivorceSet Free to Remarry

Dear Confused Christian,

So it looks like you made a mistake in judgement.  You meant to do the right thing but you married the wrong person.  And now, you hear over and over again that you're stuck and the Bible says so.

It's almost enough to make you feel like God is against you.

Expect everybody else to think you should stay in a bad marriage.  Expect to feel condemned if you even think about getting divorced.  Expect everybody else to think you should stay single after divorce -- and not even have a date while your ex is still alive.

When we got married, we intended to stay married  -- so whether we file for divorce or not -- divorce is not something we really want.

The situation is not getting any better...in fact, it's getting worse...and here's why

The loneliness, the condemnation, the feelings of missing out on a great relationship are only felt by you.  Everyone else goes on with their lives and you are left alone with your pain. What you've gone through already is bad enough.  You feel utterly torn between your heart's longing for freedom and love and your heart's devotion to Jesus.  Somehow it seems you can't have both!

Luckily, there's a solution...

Here's How and Why We Can Make You This Promise

I care about you and what you're going through.

One morning after taking my young son to Christian school, the principle came up to me, a single mother, to remind me to forget about ever getting remarried.  He even handed me a scrap of paper with the Bible verses to "prove" it!

Oh, he was talking about the wonderful pumpkin soup his wife had made for him that Sunday, but he would deny me the benefit of a spouse!

His lack of compassion was appalling, don't you think?

I guess he didn't know that I had been a serious Christian for about 30 years by then.

I guess he didn't know I had completed a bachelor's degree in History after ten grueling years of evening school and had graduated with high honors.

I guess he didn't know that I have the compassion that he seemed to lack.

In the process, I found the key that refutes the usual Christian condemnation of divorce and remarriage.  I'm eager that share that with you!

You see, before the principle said a word to me, before I was even married, the standard interpretation of Jesus' words on divorce and remarriage didn't make sense to me.  To deny divorce when it is necessary, to deny a divorced person marriage -- what purpose did that serve?  This question perplexed me for most my 30 years as a Christian.  Forbidding divorce resulted in making marriage a tool to control another.  Forbidding remarriage only made a single parent weaker and more vulnerable.  I was glad to find that Jesus' words were misinterpreted.

On a solid foundation in Bible study and a well-earned comprehension of history -- along with lots of research and compassion -- Set Free to Remarry: The Bible Teaches Divorce and Remarriage was researched and written for you.

You'll see that what the Bible really teaches about divorce and remarriage makes more sense than what you've ever been taught before.

There are some things I'm definitely not -- I am not on the payroll of any religious institution or theological school.  I can let the "cat out of the bag" because I have no congregation to try to control.  See, there are others who know the truth of what I am saying but they think it's better if you don't know.  They're only covering up the truth of the Bible.

You know the usual religious dogma that condemns divorce and remarriage inside and out...It's all over the Internet, in the churches, in your family...but I prove it's not in the Bible!

But don't just take my word for it, take a look at this...

I was raised up to believe things that aren't in the Bible like God hates divorce.  I was miserable because, since I was divorced, I felt maybe God hated what I had done to escape a loveless marriage.  I found out people's own opinions replaced the word of God.  Laura proved, however, that these things were never in the Bible, that I was sold a bill of goods!  Thanks to Laura, I now know I am free from the guilt and shame and can move on with my life.

I was most interested to see how Laura turned a historical survey into spiritual advice for those in bad marriages.  She did that with a sensitivity that can only be described as beautiful...it was obviously a labor of love.

Set Free to Remarry is a very different from the traditional approach to the subject.  Personally, I like it.  Laura strongly supports her statements.
Pastor Ramon Emilio Mendez

Laura's book reviews some of the facts about what the Bible really means when it comes to divorce.  It teaches appropriate scriptures to use to handle the subject.  Divorce is something counselors and pastors will bump their heads against and this book is a biblically-safe resource.  Laura's book goes back to tell you about God's mercy.  God doesn't want you in an abusive relationship.

Laura leaves no biblical stone unturned. Each Bible passage is addressed that has been manipulated to teach well-meaning individuals that they must stay in a bad marriage or if they are divorced, they must remain alone. Better yet, Laura shows that these very same Bible  passages actually show that divorce is biblically acceptable and that individuals are allowed to remarry.

Laura Giovanni has done important work in looking at Biblical texts critical for undestanding the possibility of divorce in a Christian marriage.  She has carefully reviewed the background of marriage and divorce in ancient Israel and provided context for the interpretation of complex passages.  Her reflections concerning Jesus' answer to his questioners on divorce deserve our attention.  She has done these things while carefully working through the arguments of significant Reformation theologian Martin Bucer on marriage and divorce.  There is much good research and thought here that is written in a passionate and engaging style.  This book should be a great help to Christians struggling with one of life's most serious crises.
